[ All relevant front and back matter is included ]

Here’s a list of pages FICTION books may include:

Front matter

  • Title page,
  • copyright page,
  • dedication,
  • epigraph – which is a quotation or saying, intended to suggest a theme;
  • table of contents,
  • acknowledgements,
  • prologue - which sets the scene for the book, told in the voice of a character;
  • preface – which is an author’s personal account about motivation for and process of writing the book;

Back matter

  • epilogue - closing chapter to resolve plot questions and/or hint at the plot for a sequel;
  • glossary, and
  • author’s bio.

NONFICTION books may include:

Front matter

  • Title page,
  • copyright page,
  • dedication,
  • epigraph,
  • table of contents,
  • acknowledgements,
  • foreword (not forward) – which is a statement from a distinguished author to lend credibility and value;
  • preface,
  • introduction;

Back matter

  • glossary,
  • afterword,
  • index,
  • appendix(ces),
  • bibliography/references,
  • various lists, and
  • author’s bio.

In contrast, a book that is NOT ready is incorrectly formatted or missing necessary front or back matter.
